Exploring Writing, Lower uses a range of fiction and nonfiction texts with activities designed to improve children’s writing and comprehension skills. Writing forms used range from recounts, instructions and poetry through to more unusual forms, such as tongue twisters and lists. A clear example of each writing form in provided, before students attempt their own piece of writing in the same genre, or form, guided by questions or suggestions.
The book aims to help children: become familiar with some of the ways in which texts can be structured; write confidently, fluently and with understanding; and develop their powers of imagination, inventiveness and critical awareness. All ideas have been tried and tested in the classroom. They can be used with small groups or whole classes.
