This book is about what it means to be human. Humans are relative newcomers on the planet. Most animals have been on Earth for much longer than the 150,000 years or so that Homosapiens has existed. Our ancestors were hominids, walking on two legs, coming from the open valleys of East Africa. We were and endangered species, and few in number. We were among the weakest of animals on the savanna not particularly fleet of foot, no large teeth or claws as weapons, and with vulnerable babies needing constant nurture and protection.
This book is one expession of humankind's natural inquisitiveness. No other species seems interested in how the body works. One great modern advance was the technology to make images of the brain at work, helping us understand the human mind what makes each of us truly human.
