This is the 17th edition of Major Principles of Media Law and the 15th published on an annual revision cycle. This edition includes new developments through the end of the Supreme Court's 2004-2005 term and will be in print in time for fall, 2005 classes.

Rarely have there been as many significant changes in media law as there were this year. The Supreme Court decided two important communications cases on the day it adjourned in June, 2005. Both were widely seen as defeats for consumers, despite industry denials. In MGM v. Grokster, the court held that products and internet services that facilitate and encourage widespread copyright infringement may be banned. In NCTA v. Brand X Internet Services, the court said cable companies offering broadband internet access need not grant access to their lines to competiltors, a ruling likely to limit competition for internet services.
