This second edition has been revised and prepared based on comments received from the users. As in the first edition, SI units are used throughout the text. This deition consists of 14 chapters. The major changes in this edition include the following :
- The majority of example problems and homework problems are
new.
- Severalnew photographs have been added.
- Chater1, "Geotechnical Engindeering -- A Historical
Perspective," provids a brief history of the developments of
geotechnical engineering from the early 18th century up to the
present.
- In Chapter 3, a section on the relationships among unit weight,
porosity, and moisture content is included. Various unit-weight
relationships have also been added in a tabular form.
- Chapter 4 , on soil compaction, has a new section on the
correction for compaction of soil with oversized particles, and
another on specialcompaction techniques that includes
vibroflotation, dynamic compaction, and compaction by blasting.
- The procedures to obtain the equivalent hydraulic conductivity
of stratified soils have been added to the chapter on hydraulic
conductivity and seepage (Chapter 5). Also included in this
chapter is a discussion on the hydraulic conductivity of
compactd clay layers.
