Because this is one indication our book has been successful in helping students learn chemistry, we believe the goals we set out in the first edition are still appropriate. Our principal goals have always been to provide a broad overview of the principles of chemistry, the reactivity of the chemical elements and their compounds, and the application of chemistry. We have organized this appooach around the close close relation between the observation chemists make of chemical and physical changes in the laboratory and in nature and the way these changes are viewed at the atomic and molecular levels.
