This book outlines the basic issues and key concepts of group process and shows how group leaders can apply these concopts in working with a variety of groups. We hope this book will excite you about the prospect of leading groups and about the value of group work. We are writing priamarily for those who want to learn the practical aspects of designing and conducting groups. Based on our teaching of group courses, we are convinced that people learn best about how groups function and how to facilitate them when they become personally and actively involved in the course activities. Your own experience as a group member, prior to taking your first group course, will provide you with a readiness for learning. It is diffecult to learn simply by reading about matters that are central to group process such as self-disclosure, working with reluctance, confrontation, giving and receiving feedback nondefensively, and connecting with others. The more you are able to actually experience a group, especially from the vantage point of being a participant, the more the concepts presented here will come alive.
