Amid ancient redwoods in a wildlife refuge, the Perdido River rushes cold and clear from the mountains to the blue Pacific, drawing tourists and flowing through the hearts of the people who live there. But all that is about to change: An out-of-state company wants to pump the river and export the water. Against this corporate Goliath stand four individuals: an attention-seeking ecologist from New York, an environmentalist returning to his hometown, a local restaurateur who fears the approaching turmoil, and a mill owner haunted by his old sins.
