As authors and instructous, we feel that a statistics text that fully integrates the use of computers with statistics is necessary for today's stuents. Concise Managerial Statistics is a nonintimidating approach to describing the concepts and applications of statistics that gives students the opportunity to observe and actually prepare solutions using a computer. The textbook coverage fully integrates Microsoft Excel (a spreadsheet package), as well as MINITAB and SPSS for Windows (easy-to-use and powerfull statistical packages). Chapter dicussions and examples feature all three software packages and many of the chapter exercises integrate computer usage.
We have paid a great deal of attention to the format of the chapter exercises. Students first learn the mechanics of a new technique, then see its application, and then apply this new procedure to several large data sets using a set of computer exercises. However, the text has been designed so that professors who want a more traditional, calculator-based approach will find an abundance of examples and exerises that can be solved without a computer. Most of the exercises do not require a computer package and contain reasonably sized data sets.
