This edition has more material than can be coverd in most one-semester courses. Therefore, the instructor can structure the course to the students' needs and interests. The book divides naturally into four parts. The first part consists fo linear mathematics : linear equations, matrices, and linear programming (Chapter 1-4); the second part in devoted to probability and statistics (Chapters 5-7); the third part covers topics utilizing the ideas of the other parts (Chapter 8-10); and the fourth part explores key topics from discrete mathematics that are sometimes inprefer to begin with linear mathematics since it makes for a smooth trasition from high school mathematics and leads quickly to interesting applications, especially linear programming. Our preference notwithstanding, the instructor may begin this book with Chapter 5 (Sets and Counting) and then do either the linear mathematics or the probability and statistics.

New to This Edition

Among the changes in this editon, the following are the most significant.

1. Additional Exercises and Updated Data We have added 217 new exercises and have updated the real-world data appearing in 55
exercises and examples.
2. Algebra Comments The steps perfromed when solving linear equations and inequalities are explained with brief commments.
3. Transition Diagrams The discussion of Markov processes has been enhanced by the use of transition diagrams.
4. Financial Computations The computations for compound interest, annuities, and mortgages in Chapter 10 (The Mathematics of
Finance) are carried out with formulas rather than with tables.
5. TVM Solver The use of the TI-83/84 Plus' TVM Solver financial calulator is explained.
6. More About Mortgages A discussion of interset-only and adjustable-rate motgages has been added to Section 10.4 (Personal
Financial Decisions). This topic is especially relevant due to the role these mortgages played in precipitating the foreclosure crisis.
7. Excel Upgrade Although the use of spreadsheet is spreadsheets is optional, many students are familiar with Excel and use it to
enhance their understanding of the topics presented in the textbook. The discussion of Excel has been expanded to include Excel
2007.
