The volumes in the Longman Literature and Culture Series present thoughtful and diverse approaches to the teaching of literature. Each is devoted to a special topic and designed for classes ranging from composition courses with a literature emphasis to introductory courses in literature to literature courses that focus on special topics, American studies, and cultural studies courses.
Although the selections in each volume can be considered in terms of their formal literary properties, the power of these works also derives from their ability to induce students to read, reread, think, sort out ideas, and connect personal views to the explicit and implicit values expressed in the literary works. In this way, the Longman Literrature and Culture Series teaches critical analysis and critical thinking, abilities that will serve all students well, regardless of their majors.
