English for Secretaries is an intermediate language course desgined to help the foreign secretary who needs English in order to function efficiently and confidently in her job. It is assumed that the secretary already has a basic knowledge of English.

The material is centred around episodes in the working lives of secretaries in an imaginary company. Throughout the course emphasis is placed on developing those language skills that are most frequently required of a secretary within the situations in which she finds herself in her office; e.g. meeting visitors, taking telephone messages, writing letters and telegrams, correcting draft correspondence, understanding recorded information. Role simulation is used to provide a realistic framework within which the student can activate the vacabulary, gambits and structures practised in more controlled situations in the classroom and language laboratory.

The course includes practice in pronunciation; remedial grammar exercises and drills; situational dialogues; and rhythm, intonation and stress exercises.

The accoumpanying Teacher's Book contains unit summaries, comprehension questions, keys to the excercises, tapescripts and role descriptions.

A set of 6 tapes or cassettes is available. These contain the introductory recordings for each unit, together with the language laboratory drills.
