The fundamentals of digital signal processing are readily available in a variety of excellent text and reference books and form the basis for senior and graduate-level courses at virtually all engineering schools. Many schools also offer advanced topics course in digital signal processing, as has been the case at M.I.T. for the past ten years. More advanced material appropriate for these courses has been accessible primarily through journal articles or through books dealing with a single specialized topic or area. The need for a principal reference book or textbook on advanced topics, both for advanced courses and for general reference, has been a prime motivation behind the development of this book.
Our goal is to provide in a single volume an introduction to a vairety of advanced topics in signal processing. While an edited book has certain limitations and drawbacks, it is an ideal format for treating a broad spectrum of advanced topics because it provides the opportunity for each topic to be written by an expert in that field. Effort has been made to keep the notation as consistent as possible throughout and to cross-reference between chapter when appropriate.
