This book is an interdisciplinary study of how nature works, how we interact with nature, and how we can live more sustainably. Throughout all editions of this and my other textbooks, I have sought to tell a story of how human societies can traverse a path to sustainability.
Five major subthemes---natural capital, natural capital degradation, solutions, trade-offs, and individuals matter--guide the way to sustainabilithy. Figure 1-2 (p. 7) show a path to sustainability based on these subthemes.
