ABOUT THE COVER Often, chemists look to mature for the discovery of novel drugs. The Mayapple plant contains podophyllotoxin. Taking that structure as a clue, chemists created a synthetic analong, etoposide, and found it to be an effective agent in the treatment of small-cell lung cancer, testicular cancer, lymphomas, leukemias, and several types of brain tumors. Etoposide also inhibits toposiomerase ll, an important DNA-regulating enzyme.
