WORLD OF RISK was inspired by a set of personal experiences and observations that took place over a uniquely turbulent and troubled time in Asia. Because my family and I had moved to Singapore in the summer of 1997, we were able to experience at first hand the "haze" and the Asian economic crisis, and could follow daily press coverage of a fatal viral outbreak in Malaysia.
Other catastrophic events taking place in Asia over that period provided further headlines and instructive stories in the regional media: the flooding in China that killed 4,000 people and led to a ban on deforestation activity; the continuing decline of the Japanese economy; the spread of the Asian economic contagion to other emerging markets and an increase in poverty and economic disparity as a result of the crisis; acts of piracy in the South China Sea; and corruption and crime amounting to billions of dollars in Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Burma, and other emerging Asian nations. Tensions between Taiwan and China, and between the US and China had a direct impact on local capital markets and were the chief topics of conversation for many weeks across North and Southeast Asia.
