Inequalities in Carework for Children and Youth
This volume confronts two myths that prevent the United States from closing the care gap for children and youth. The first myth is that the work of caring for children and youth is and should be done solely by families, particularly mothers. The authors of the chapters challenge this myth and demonstrate that there is a broad range of people and institutions that can and do contribute to providing care for children and youth.

The second myth is that parents and other caregivers for children and youth have equal access to plentiful resources. Despite a growing awareness of diversity in U.S. families--by economic status, race/etnicity, and sexual orientation--scholars and citizens continue to talk about "the family" or "family values" as if all families had the same resources with which to raise their children. In this volume, we challenge both myths. We also propose directions for "rethinking carework."
